Coca Chu, Hamilton Island

Okay.. call us crazy but we dined at Coca Chu not once, not twice.. but three times!~ and we were only there for a week! Great for couples (which was what we did on the Mon and Wed) and with friends (met up with friends and ended up being the last table to leave the restaurant!).

Loving the Modern, Fresh and Creative Asian Cuisine – Coca Chu is definitely one of the most inviting and exciting places to eat on Hamilton Island.

Beef and Potato Curry – the aromatic curry was delicious with beef cheeks that were so tender. Loved the sweetness from the pineapple however they need to increase the spiciness of the curry to make it a perfect dish.

Crispy pigs ears w pickled chilli – Delicious. My family loves to make a good pig ear salad for any occasion but the crispiness surprised me – in a good way! The saltiness of the pig ear went well with the sour pickles and spicy fish sauce. Gotta tell my mum about this..

Twice cooked pork ribs w blood plum tamarind sauce – A very sweet dish. Lucky the pork were falling off those bone….

Other dishes without images (either I forgot or they were really bad photos… sorry!):

  • Caramelized lamb shoulder – 500g of deliciousness. The fish sauce is slightly too sweet but nothing a few more slices of fresh chili didn’t fixed. Anything caramelized is a definitely a winner in my eyes.
  • Sichuan half duck w chili coriander ginger  – another sweet dish. Again all they had to do was add a few more fresh chilies then this is another almost perfect dish, after-all isn’t Sihuan cuisine all about bold and spicy flavors?
  • Whitsunday bugs w cashew nuts – not a big fan of seafood so I gave this dish a missed but the boys were very satisfied.
  • Twice cooked beef shin w sticky rice – a very interesting dish. Portion was larger then expected for a starter.
  • Silkin tofu – Can’t go wrong with a healthy selection. Would have liked the tofu to be a little bit crunchier however the soy ginger dressing was deliciously sweet and tasty.

Services were friendly, genuine and full of food knowledge. I was lucky enough to receive a complimentary champa and had the lovely waiters serenaded for my 30th birthday. Definitely a lovely culinary experience/s!

What a beautiful modern wine bar with a rustic feel that showcase the finest regional produce I’ve ever tasted. Was staying at the Mansion Hotel so decided to swing passed this newly renovated winery (after a fire few months ago). Small green area out front if you would like to have a picnic on a nice sunny day. Unfortunately the day we went it was slightly gloomy so we sat inside instead.

20171022_220257_resized

Service was lovely. Booked online. Very efficient. Menu items had a good selection.

CHARCUTERIE board served with cornichons, pickled shallots, chutney, horseradish & brioche crisps and we got the grilled chorizo and duck pate as extra. Everything tasted DELICIOUS! Hands down one of the best charcuterie we had. The duck liver pate was smooth and flavorsome and the chorizo was nicely grilled. The serving was pretty big so we decided to share a main and a side.

20171022_220602_resized

ROAST PORK with roasted artichoke and apple sauce – this was the special, free range pork. Unfortunately a bit too bland for me. I felt that the roast was slightly overcooked so it was slightly too dry and perhaps require anothee glazed as the apple sauce was not enough to eat with the pork.

20171022_220643_resized

POLENTA CHIPS with smoke tomato jam… MmmmM a great side. Jam was nice and sweet. I was expecting the chips to be crunchier but I didn’t mind the light and fluffiness of it though!

P.S Free wine tasting for Mansion Hotel guests I think… we didn’t have time to do it though =)

MissChu, Exhibition Street

img_20170913_171730_984_resized.jpg

So I’ve heard about MissChu Tuckshop story a while ago and finally got to try it when I realised the exhbition store was located a few min walk away from my new workplace.. hooray!! As their website mention ‘the original Asian street-food ‘tuckshop’’ -this joint’s menu offer a variety option of healthy hawker food items inspired by all the beautiful cuisines of Vietnam. Small but sufficient – write your orders down and pay at the front. Great for small groups.

20170913_170554_resized

Came here with a friend and I was rather surprised with how tasty everything was. Yes slightly more expensive then the usual.. but we are paying for the more inventive, modern fusion style cusine that offers a difference. The highest praised to the Atlantic salmon in XO sauce with rice & quinoa. The salmon was perfectly seared and complement well with the the rice and quinoa. Slightly too much sauce but would rather more then no sauce hehe!!

20170913_170846_resized

The roast duck rice paper roll was good. Slightly more expensive then usual and the steamed crepes with the prawn and bamboo shoot was different. Different in a good way though. I loved the crunchiness off the bamboo and the mince prawn. Overall a delight! Looking forward to trying out the other dishes soon!

2Latte, Thornbury

I’ve reviewed 2Latte cafe 2 years ago (to date) and it’s time for an update! As friends of 2Latte – this great modern cafe on High Street deserve another great mention. A reminder that there great local cafe in the north side!

20170909_125345_resized

The key to 2Latte – Family own cafe, where you know you’ll get great customer service who are friendly, open and humble. And that’s why when we have a spare hour or two, we’ll swing by here to grab at least 1… (or 2 lattes) to start my day.

20170909_125208_resized

I love their menu! Options! – not too little not too much. They like to change it up – after-all what you feel like eating in summer isn’t always what you like to eat in winter right? Simple foods make perfect. Ingredients are always fresh. Plenty of fillings in your meals. Servings are generous for the prices they charge.

20170909_123706_resized

With the asian fusion menu hit that has hit Melbourne lately, 2Latte add a touch of just that – reminding us that the owners have a Vietnamese background – that’s right, who say you can’t have a latte with a crispy Banh Xeo (Vietnamese Pancake filled with meat, prawns and asian herbs) OR a classic Big Breakfast with a Ca Phe Sua Da (Vietnamese dripped coffee)???

20170909_125218_resized

And the beautiful desserts are sourced locally.. and sometimes home-made too!! Remember to leave some room to try at least one of their delicious looking sweet goodies or maybe just grab one for takeaway… mMmmm…

Southside Central, Windsor

20170723_114125_resized

We were fortunate to be invited by Southside Central to dine at their Windsor location which recently opened up in April. To be honest I didn’t need much convincing to take up the offer as they simply sold me at “we have perfected the art of spiked milkshakes and mouth watering burgers”…

20170722_191430_resized

20170723_114144_resized

LOCATION:
It’s located on Chapel street directly opposite Windsor station. Note there’s always heaps of traffic on Chapel so do give yourself extra traveling time!! (we were about 20min late for our booking…) ~

20170722_135448_resized

20170722_135259_resized

FIRST IMPRESSION:
What a great two-storey burger joint with beautiful graffiti artwork along all the walls. The venue is much bigger than it looks from outside. The fit out is simple and attractive especially with the 90’s retro style; the black vinyl seating and the pink neon signs. Not a big fan of these small seating, especially those 2 seater attached to the wall – there’s simply not enough space for the amount of foods you would want to order!! – And the pink neon lights did not do much justice for the photos of the foods I took.. sorry in advance.

20170722_135345_resized

Food wise – DELICIOUS!!! We were happy to have Audrey bring us a selection of their top menu items so it was a  great surprise when a variety of great looking goodies came out.

20170722_191647_resized

BITES:
*Mac’n’cheese nuggets – these were lovely. They were crunchy on the outside and cheesy on the inside. The mayo itself was creamy but I couldn’t really taste the with spicy tomato ~ lucky the nugget itself was good to taste on its own!

20170722_135104_resized

20170722_132028_resized

*Jalapeno poppers – not a big fan of jalapeno but my partner absolutely loved this side. And they were huge!! I thought it would be majorly spicy but lucky it wasn’t. The sour cream was def the best dip to go with the poppers.

20170723_114246_resized

BURGERS:
*Harlem Burger – This chicken and waffle reminded me of NYC especially since we were there only 6 months ago! The whole dish definitely provided the great southern vibe. The fried chicken was moist and serving was generous. I loved how the cheese melted along the side, and the white bbq sauce & maple mayonaise served in between the deliciously soft and crunchy buttery milk waffle mMmmM…. sweet, and salty all in the one dish! I’m a messy eater so the parchment paper with the small busket was presented nicely with the theme of the restaurant however wasnt too practical for me who likes to eat my burgers et. all with a fork and knife.

20170722_135118_resized

*The Southside Meat Market – Hubby thoroughly enjoyed this burger. The Beef pattie was juicy, southern fried chicken added another level of texture to the burger and the bacon relish was like an additional sauce for the rest of the burger.

20170723_114354_resized

SPIKED SHAKES:
*Snickers spiked – OMG one of the best shake I’ve ever had! The shake itself is full of flavour, not too sweet and the hint of Frangelico liqueur is just perfect to complement the rest of the choc goodness. Not a big fan of the milk bottle that it came with, and it wasnt too practical with the whipped cream and bit of snicker on top.. give me the old traditional milkshake cup please!!

20170722_131634_resized

So overall a fantastic meal! Service was efficient and friendly. Great pumping hip hop tunes to go along with my meal.  I’m sure this joint will def be the next new destination for the burgers + spiked drinks+ beats!!

Till next time

Fork & Fingers Ascot Vale

Fork & Fingers has a very modern look and feel to it. Upon entering the very quiet restaurant (Thursday night and we were the only one in the restaurant at 6PM).

Menu was all about mixing exotic Indian flavours with a fusion of other cultures i.e. taco, burgers etc. Very modern but we opted for the traditional dishes, hence ordering 4 curries, 3 Nan breads, rice and some beverages. And although the dishes looked small when it came out (and presented very nicely), boy was it a struggle to finish it all up!

First off I must say one of the best Nan bread I’ve eaten! A touch of too much garlic however once dipped in the curries it was heaven!

IMG_1129[1]

Butter Chicken – godfather of Indian curry – my must have dish. And I was not disappointed! The tomato based sauce was creamy and the chicken was cooked to perfection where it was so tender and moist. We got a medium version however I think we could have gone with Hot for the extra kick to bring out that sauce a bit more!

IMG_1128[1]

Lam Rogan Jose – The lamb was braised very well with delicious cooked gravy – very aromatic.

IMG_1125[1].JPG

Goan Fish Curry – The spicy fish cooked in coconut with a lot of ground spices was a surprisingly good dish to me. I’ve never been a big fan of fish curry however the curry was light and sweet and definitely works well on the place with the other curries.

IMG_1124[1]

Veg Korma – homemade with various veggies. It was tasty however the vegetables were all a bit too confusing for me. Probably braised a bit too long so it did get a bit drowned out by the curry itself.

IMG_1131[1]

Mango Lassi was delicious at first however quarter way through it got a bit too creamy and thick for me. Perhaps a bit too much yoghurt?

IMG_1121[1]

Overall a lovely experience. Booking was made easy via open table bookings. The service was lovely and he was very friendly with a great sense of humour. We sat down at 6pm and were out by 7pm. It was great for a quick dinner before our cirque du soleil show at Flemington Racecourse which was a few min drives down the road!
