Coca Chu, Hamilton Island

Okay.. call us crazy but we dined at Coca Chu not once, not twice.. but three times!~ and we were only there for a week! Great for couples (which was what we did on the Mon and Wed) and with friends (met up with friends and ended up being the last table to leave the restaurant!).

Loving the Modern, Fresh and Creative Asian Cuisine – Coca Chu is definitely one of the most inviting and exciting places to eat on Hamilton Island.

Beef and Potato Curry – the aromatic curry was delicious with beef cheeks that were so tender. Loved the sweetness from the pineapple however they need to increase the spiciness of the curry to make it a perfect dish.

Crispy pigs ears w pickled chilli – Delicious. My family loves to make a good pig ear salad for any occasion but the crispiness surprised me – in a good way! The saltiness of the pig ear went well with the sour pickles and spicy fish sauce. Gotta tell my mum about this..

Twice cooked pork ribs w blood plum tamarind sauce – A very sweet dish. Lucky the pork were falling off those bone….

Other dishes without images (either I forgot or they were really bad photos… sorry!):

  • Caramelized lamb shoulder – 500g of deliciousness. The fish sauce is slightly too sweet but nothing a few more slices of fresh chili didn’t fixed. Anything caramelized is a definitely a winner in my eyes.
  • Sichuan half duck w chili coriander ginger  – another sweet dish. Again all they had to do was add a few more fresh chilies then this is another almost perfect dish, after-all isn’t Sihuan cuisine all about bold and spicy flavors?
  • Whitsunday bugs w cashew nuts – not a big fan of seafood so I gave this dish a missed but the boys were very satisfied.
  • Twice cooked beef shin w sticky rice – a very interesting dish. Portion was larger then expected for a starter.
  • Silkin tofu – Can’t go wrong with a healthy selection. Would have liked the tofu to be a little bit crunchier however the soy ginger dressing was deliciously sweet and tasty.

Services were friendly, genuine and full of food knowledge. I was lucky enough to receive a complimentary champa and had the lovely waiters serenaded for my 30th birthday. Definitely a lovely culinary experience/s!

MissChu, Exhibition Street

So I’ve heard about MissChu Tuckshop story a while ago and finally got to try it when I realised the exhbition store was located a few min walk away from my new workplace.. hooray!! As their website mention ‘the original Asian street-food ‘tuckshop’’ -this joint’s menu offer a variety option of healthy hawker food items inspired by all the beautiful cuisines of Vietnam. Small but sufficient – write your orders down and pay at the front. Great for small groups.

Came here with a friend and I was rather surprised with how tasty everything was. Yes slightly more expensive then the usual.. but we are paying for the more inventive, modern fusion style cusine that offers a difference. The highest praised to the Atlantic salmon in XO sauce with rice & quinoa. The salmon was perfectly seared and complement well with the the rice and quinoa. Slightly too much sauce but would rather more then no sauce hehe!!

The roast duck rice paper roll was good. Slightly more expensive then usual and the steamed crepes with the prawn and bamboo shoot was different. Different in a good way though. I loved the crunchiness off the bamboo and the mince prawn. Overall a delight! Looking forward to trying out the other dishes soon!

Lucy Liu Kitchen & Bar

First timer at Lucy Liu Kitchen and Bar, I must admit I haven’t heard of it before – Yes I’m like a hermit, where have I been blah blah…

Entry to the space is now via cobbled Oliver Lane at the rear which is weird, I understand it’s a quirky idea but why can’t there be 2 doors, one via the lane and one via Russell Street? Cobbled stone aren’t the best for women’s in heels (insert giggles).

First impression, it is a very charming restaurant. The interior is a mix of communal and booth seating. Very loud with the music and the customers, we had to kind of shout at each other at one stage to hear the person across from us. Highly recommend reservations. We managed to get one day before for a 5.30PM seating which then we were promptly excused at 7PM on the dot for next reservation.

Service was good however that was from the main server. The other two that we got was sort of random, asked me for either tap or sparkling water and never came back to me. And the other one felt like they were rushing us to eat so they could clear the next table. Yes we know you told us we needed to be out. We were aware… just be genuine to us and you will get the respect back. A diners experience starts from the service to the foods!

Food wise, menu offered were very similar to other Fusion restaurants. Frankly I must say there are way too many Asian Fusion restaurants in the CBD now. Choices of Asian share plates, it offers the usual betel leaf entrée which came with tuna, soy and ginger. This was a disappointment to me, the leaf was fresh but I did not taste the soy and ginger flavour at all. Then we ordered the Kingfish Sashimi, with toast coconut and foam? The foam was a delight with the Kingfish however I was missing the chilli kick! The final dish we got was the Korean style Pork Belly, with apple kimchi salad and pancake and hoi sin. Boy this was huge! Fit for a party of 4, we had plenty left over between the 3 of us. The Pork was dropping off the bone but I’m not highly convinced I like this dish to be served with the pancake. The pancake was dry and was cracking half the time I attempted to wrap it. Where’s the light floury pancake like what you get when you have Peking duck? Tsk Tsk. The Kim chi on the other hand was the star to me! It added a special kick to the combined dish. However would I return for this dish? Probably not.

Overall a pleasant experience. But Lucy Liu is just another I have to add to the mixed of Ok places. I might stick to my absolute favourite Longrain or Supernormal though…
